GHG is looking for a Dental Assistant to provide services for the inmates incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution in Milan, Michigan.

Available Position: Dental Assistant - These services will be rendered on‐site for the inmate population incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) located in Milan, Michigan.

Place of Performance: Services will be performed in the Health Services Department of the FCI, 4004 East Arkona Road, Milan, MI 48160.
Facility Information: The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Milan is a low security facility housing male inmates with a detention center for pretrial and holdover male inmates. FCI Milan is located in southeastern Michigan, 45 miles south of Detroit, 15 miles south of Ann Arbor, and 30 miles north of Toledo, Ohio.

Work Schedule: 
  • 22 to 24 hours per week.
  • The Dental Assistant will normally work four (4) days per week, 6 hours per day.
  • Workdays will be selected from Monday through Friday between the hours of  8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., excluding and unpaid half hour for lunch break.
  • Days or scheduled will be selected and could be change or modified as per mutual agreement within the Dental Assistant and the Chief Dental Officer. 
Due to the nature of the correctional setting, delays in performance of work may be expected. Such delays may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, electrical or mechanical problems, or other security matters. 

Period of Performance: Five (5) years (60 months) renewed annually.

Description of Services (includes but it is not limited to): 

Oral Surgery - The Dental Assistant shall evaluate procedure to be performed. Prepare anesthetic, appropriate instruments with sterile technique and drapes, evacuate surgical field, retract tissue, irrigate bone structure during rotary instrumentation, remove sutures, apply appropriate medicaments as prescribed by the dentist, and give post-surgical instructions.
Operative Procedures - The Dental Assistant  shall prepare operative environment, anesthetics and instruments utilizing sterile technique. Maintain dry operative field, retract tissue, place bases, liners and retainers with matrices. Place pack and carve sedative restorations. Polish amalgam restorations.
Prosthetics - The Dental Assistant  shall select appropriate trays and impression materials, make preliminary impressions for study models, fabricate custom trays.  Pour models and minor denture repairs.
Radiology - The Dental Assistant shall take and develop intraoral and extraoral radiographs, including bite wings, periapical and panorex films.
Endodontic - The Dental Assistant shall place rubber dam, prepare sterile field for procedure, remove temporary filling with rotary slow speed instrument, irrigate canals and prepare appropriate     medicaments and instruments.
Preventive - The Dental Assistant shall provide instruction on oral hygiene care.  Apply fluoride and desensitizing agents.
Clerical Duties - The Dental Assistant shall be required to perform minor clerical duties; such as filing, typing call-outs and institutional memorandums, answering phones and scheduling patients.
Supplies - The contractor shall advise the Chief Dental Officer when stock levels of expendable   supplies used in the dental clinic are below adequate levels.  He/she must advise of the need to purchase additional supplies.  He/she must maintain accurate stock record cards.  He/she must contact vendors for pricing information and prepare Visa Credit Card and Request of Purchase forms for ordering of supplies.
Uniform requirements: 
The Dental Assistant must wear appropriate and professional attire at all times (scrub uniforms are approved). The Dental Assistant is prohibited from wearing khaki or green clothing of any type as this is the color clothing the inmate population wear.

Position Requirements/Qualifications
License/Certifications: must have a certification as a Dental Assistant and a current state license.
Education: The Dental Assistant applicant must have completed an accredited Dental Assistant training program. The applicant shall possess knowledge of dental x-ray equipment and radiation precautions.
Experience: Additionally, the Dental Assistant shall have a minimum of one (1) year of experience.
Life saving Certifications: The Dental Assistant must be certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support, in accordance with the American Heart Association (CPR or BLS are acceptable).
