Work Schedule: Contracted employees may be asked to work up to a 40 hours/week schedule and may be occasionally asked to work overtime. Contracted Histopathology Technicians will be scheduled between the hours of 5:00 AM and 6:00 PM Monday – Friday, excluding federal holidays.

Period of Performance: date of hire until 09/30/2018

Scope of Work: The Histopathology Technicians provides histopathology services for the Anatomic Pathology Section of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the VA Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. Histopathology Technician performs work for light microscopic study which includes embedding, sectioning, H&E staining, special staining and IHC staining of a variety of tissue specimens. The position requires a person with judgment and a sense of responsibility since the specimens are irreplaceable if handled inappropriately. The incumbent needs knowledge of special stains and immunostains. The incumbent must have the technical ability and skills in the areas listed above. The incumbent must have sufficient knowledge of chemistry to deal with chemical calculations involving reagents and buffers, measurement of pH and the chemical properties of stains. The incumbent must have knowledge of anatomy so to identify components of tissue. The incumbent must be able to enter, retrieve, edit and print data from the ECHCS computer system (VISTA). The incumbent has knowledge of regulations relating to Anatomic Pathology including: College of American Pathologists, The Joint Commission, OSHA. The work is in the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory. There is daily exposure to material that may harbor infectious diseases, noxious fumes, hazardous chemicals, flammables and corrosives. Proper personal protective equipment and hoods must be used.

Position Requirements/Qualifications:
Contracted histopathology technicians must possess either Histotechnician HT (ASCP) or Histotechnologist HTL (ASCP) certification OR at least five years of documented experience performing histopathology duties in a hospital setting.  
Contracted histopathology technicians must be able to demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

a. Knowledge of general histopathology processes.
b. Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population
c. Possess great attention to detail for the nature of the work being performed.
d. Ability to prepare slides and utilize a variety of special stains
e. Ability to identify and process anatomical specimens.
