We are seeking a Dental Assistant for an available contract opportunity to provide on-site services to individuals who are under the custody and care of the Federal Bureau of Prisons within a secure correctional environment at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) and Federal Prison Camp (FPC), Schuylkill, located in Minerville, PA 17954.

Available Position: Dental Assistant services for the Health Services Department at the Federal Correctional Institution Schuylkill located in Minersville, PA. These services will be rendered on‐site for the inmate population incarcerated at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) – Schuylkill located in Minersville, Pennsylvania

Facility Information: The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) - Schuylkill in Minersville, Pennsylvania, is a medium security facility housing male offenders.  An adjacent minimum security satellite prison camp also houses male offenders. FCI Schuylkill is located in north-central Schuylkill County, 15 miles northwest of Pottsville, 46 miles north of Harrisburg, and 175 miles north of Washington, D.C. Judicial District: Middle Pennsylvania.

Work Schedule: 30 hours per week, Normal service hours will be between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. However, FCI Schuylkill reserves the right to alter schedules should the need arise. Due to the nature of the correctional setting, delays in performance of work may be expected. 
Description of Duties: Dental Assistant - Contractor is responsible for provision of the services as listed below: 
1. Assists Dental Officer in dental specialty sections: Restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, and examinations;
2. Retrieve patients' records and escorts patients to proper dental specialty section; seats and prepares patient for attending Dental Officer; assists Dental Officer by preparing dental instruments, essential materials, drugs and medications; passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates oral cavity, and operates aspirator; observes patients' responses, and assists patient for dismissal from Dental clinic; gives instructions for subsequent dental appointments; makes necessary entries on dental treatment records; prepares dental treatment room for next patient; assists in the treatment of emergency cases;
3. Maintains dental equipment; cleans, sharpens, and sterilizes instruments; performs daily inspection of equipment, and makes minor repairs; reports defective equipment, or utilizes corrective action;
4. Performs routine oral prophylaxis of the clinical crowns of teeth; uses dental hand instruments, mechanical instruments (including ultrasonic), oral hygiene aids and prophylaxis paste to provide necessary oral prophylactic services; prepares entries for patients' records; selects and applies medication in proper portion and anti-cariogenic agents to surfaces of teeth; applies medication prescribed by a dental officer to gingiva to promote healing;.
5. Fabricates and repairs dental prosthesis and appliances under supervision; performs procedures pursuant to fabrication and repair of complete denture prosthesis and removable partial prosthesis, using acrylic resins and porcelain as basic materials;
6. Takes radiographs of patients using standard dental radiographic, panelipse, cephalometric, and transcranial equipment; obtains diagnostic quality periapical, occlusal, lateral, jaw, TMJ, and panographic radiographs; correctly positions patient and film and determines level of radiation intensity to minimize radiation exposure of patients;
7. Develops, fixes, washes, and dries radiographic films using automatic developing units if not equipped with digital radiographic equipment;
8. Performs and interprets four (4) quality assurances on a schedule basis on digital radiographic equipment; and is responsible for maintaining proper infection control procedures in radiographic techniques; and sterilizes contaminated biological waste of dental clinic several times a day;
9. Specific directions related primarily to unusual treatment concerning emergency professional therapy are given by the attending dentist who explains changes in professional dental procedures that are available to resolve such problems, and render advice as needed. Guidelines consist of applicable professional practices and specific written and oral instructions;
10. Services are not professional in nature, although special training and education are desirable for optimum performance of these duties;
11. Services will be unsupervised in nature; however, due to the nature of the services provided, some direction will be provided by the Chief Dental Officer. Services shall be monitored by the assigned Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR). Contractor shall utilize his or her own methods of delivering the required services;
12. Making primary impressions and pouring of the casts. Tooth shade selection for composite restorations and dentures.

Education and Experience: Dental Assistant
The individual providing the Dental Assistant services under BPA award must:
1. Have completed a Dental Assistant training program, or commensurate experience;
2. Possess knowledge of dental x-ray equipment and radiation precautions;
3. Maintain current Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification in accordance with the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
